Can cats eat milk?
!Caution for cats
Despite the cartoons, most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Milk often causes diarrhea.
What’s the risk?
Kittens drink their mother’s milk, but most cats lose the enzyme to digest lactose after weaning. Water is all a cat needs. Lactose-free cat milk is available as an occasional treat.
Signs to watch for
- Diarrhea
- Gas
- Vomiting
How much is dangerous?
Best avoided. A lap or two rarely causes serious harm.
If your cat ate some
Mild upset should pass. Call your vet if diarrhea lasts more than a day.
