Can dogs eat milk?

Caution for dogs

A small amount is usually fine, but many dogs are lactose intolerant and get diarrhea.

What’s the risk?

Puppies digest milk, but many adult dogs lose the ability. Milk and ice cream are also high in fat and sugar. Ice cream may contain chocolate or xylitol.

Signs to watch for

  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Vomiting

How much is dangerous?

A few laps at most.

If your dog ate some

Mild upset usually passes within a day. Call your vet if it doesn’t.
