Are lilies safe for dogs?
!Caution for dogs
True lilies and daylilies usually only cause a mild upset stomach in dogs, but some plants called “lilies” are dangerous.
What’s the risk?
The lilies that are deadly to cats don’t damage dogs’ kidneys. However, lily of the valley affects the heart, and calla and peace lilies irritate the mouth. If you’re not sure which plant it was, take a photo and call.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Drooling
- Pawing at the mouth (calla and peace lilies)
- Slow or irregular heartbeat (lily of the valley)
How much is dangerous?
Small nibbles of true lilies are usually mild. Any amount of lily of the valley needs a call to the vet.
If your dog ate some
Identify the plant if you can. Call your vet if your dog ate lily of the valley, ate a lot, or seems unwell.
