Can cats eat xylitol (sugar-free gum)?

Caution for cats

Probably not as dangerous as for dogs, but xylitol isn’t well studied in cats, so keep it away from them.

What’s the risk?

Research suggests cats don’t react to xylitol the way dogs do, but evidence is limited. Gum and candy are also choking risks.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness or wobbliness
  • Lethargy

How much is dangerous?

Unknown. Treat any significant amount with care.

If your cat ate some

If your cat ate xylitol and seems unwell, call your vet or a pet poison line.
